Ancient Egypt makes a winning start to the season in Newmarket Stakes
Frankel colt Ancient Egypt made a winning start to his three-year-old campaign when landing the Listed Newmarket Stakes on his seasonal debut on Friday (1st May).
Taken from the European Bloodstock News, 2nd May 2026:
Trained by Charlie Johnston and ridden by Rowan Scott, the colt virtually made all, having contested the lead with the favourite Poseidon’s Warrior in the early stages. As the race developed, the favourite weakened and Ancient Egypt continued to travel strongly at the head of affairs, with Lyneham and My Love Is King (Kingman) emerging as his main challengers approaching the final furlong. The latter moved into contention to press the leader, but Ancient Egypt found more when asked and asserted close home, staying on well to score by two lengths from My Love Is King, with Archers Bay a further length and a quarter back in third.
Having been unbeaten on his first two starts as a two-year-old, Ancient Egypt was tested in Group company for the first time in the Gr.2 Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket in September, where he failed to make an impact. He left that effort behind here on his return and, on the
evidence of this performance, looks capable of progressing further as the season unfolds.
Owned by Amo Racing and bred by Yulong Investments, he was purchased for 1,100,000gns at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 in 2024 and is a half-brother to the Gr.3-placed winner Redressed, out of the winning Oasis Dream mare Atone. He hails from the family of the Listed-placed winner Midsummer (dam of the multiple Gr.1 winner Midday).
