Out of a mare, Suelita, who is becoming something of a blue hen for the Harper family’s Whitsbury Manor Stud, Chaldean belongs to a line once cultivated to great effect by Gerald Leigh.
Leigh bought into the line when purchasing Cambretta, a Roberto granddaughter of 1957 Dewhurst Stakes winner Torbella, from Robert Sangster in 1978. He went on to breed the Group 3 winners Pluralisme and Only out of the mare before selling her at the 1982 Keeneland November Sale for $1 million to the Maktoum family’s Aston Upthorpe Stud. Among the foals Cambretta left behind for Leigh was the winning Icecapade filly Ghislaine, and it is that mare who has gone on to forge the most powerful branch of the Cambretta line, initially dam of the top miler Markofdistinction. Today, over 30 stakes winners descend from her including Australian champion two-year-old Pierro, now a highly successful stallion for Coolmore Australia.
Chaldean’s dam Suelita, who descends from Ghislaine via the Listed-placed Ahead (by Shirley Heights) and her Listed-winning daughter Horatia (by Machiavellian), has done plenty to add to that total. Inbred 3x3 to Machiavellian, a pattern that she shares with leading sire Lope De Vega among others, the daughter of Dutch Art is the dam of five stakes horses from just six foals of racing age, namely sprint Listed scorer The Broghie Man (by Cityscape), the Listed-placed Gloves Lynch (by Mukhadram), Mill Reef Stakes winner Alkumait (by Showcasing; now at stud in Ireland), this season’s Listed winning and Group 1-placed sprinter Get Ahead (by Showcasing) and Chaldean.
Waiting in the wings for the mare is a 2022 Kingman filly, who topped the 2022 Tattersalls December Foal Sale when sold to Juddmonte Farms for 1,000,000gns.

Widely regarded as the best European racehorse of the modern era, Frankel’s unbeaten stretch of 14 races, ten of them at Group 1 level, was the longest seen in Europe since Ribot, foaled in 1952. A Champion two-year-old who became to be as equally dominant over mile and a quarter as he was over a mile, he was awarded a Timeform rating of 147, the highest in the organisation’s history. “He’s the best I’ve ever had and the best I’ve ever seen, I’d be very surprised if there’s ever been better,” commented his trainer Sir Henry Cecil.
When it comes to a second career at stud, however, such brilliance can lead to inflated expectations. Yet ten years on from his retirement to Banstead Manor Stud, Frankel has answered every question asked of him in that department, his reputation as a consistent source of Group 1 talent over a range of distances, ages and conditions firmly underlined by his place as a champion sire of Britain and Ireland.
In 2021, Frankel became the first British-based sire to be crowned the champion of Britain and Ireland in 24 years, when Mill Reef posthumously led the standings, thereby breaking the domination of his late sire Galileo, the 12-time champion. He was also Europe’s leading sire that year, and as it stands, he will repeat the trick in 2023 with a collection of 30 European stakes winners - more than any other sire - contributing to another outstanding season.
Chaldean, as winner of the 2,000 Guineas, played an extremely important role in Frankel’s year. Overall, his progeny won 14 Group/Grade 1 races in 2023 ranging from two-year-old Ylang Ylang in the Fillies’ Mile to three-year-old Soul Sister, winner of the Oaks. French three-year-olds Kelina and Jannah Rose also struck in the 7f Prix de la Foret and 1m2f Prix Saint-Alary while the accomplished older horses Inspiral, Mostahdaf, Westover, Nashwa and Courage Mon Ami collectively turned in sparkling performances from a mile to extended distances. It’s a powerful collection of horses and one that complements his overall record which currently consists of 124 stakes winners, among them 33 Group/Grade 1 scorers including the British Classic winners Chaldean, Adayar, Anapurna, Soul Sister, Logician and Hurricane Lane.
Therein lies a snapshot of Frankel as a sire; not only is he a regular contributor of class, as illustrated by his 13% black-type winners to foals of racing age ratio, but his progeny tend to be tough, versatile and sound. They can be excellent at two, as illustrated in recent seasons by Chaldean, Inspiral and Ylang Ylang, but many of them also possess the constitution to hold their form as time goes on. There is perhaps no better example of that than Kirsten Racing’s exceptional mare Alpinista, whose unbeaten run of six Group 1 victories was capped by the 2022 Arc.
Now the next chapter is being written as various sons of Frankel head to stud. One of the first, dual Champion Stakes winner Cracksman, couldn’t have made a better start as the sire of unbeaten Arc hero Ace Impact out of his first crop, something that should bode well for the future prospects of Frankel’s other sire sons.

One of the top lots of the 2020 Tattersalls December Foal Sale when bought for 550,000gns by Juddmonte, Chaldean was sent to Andrew Balding and came to hand early for the Kingsclere trainer to break his maiden over 7f at Newbury in July of his two-year-old year.
The Racing Post commented following that performance that he looked to possess ‘plenty of natural speed’ and that attribute was again on show next time out when he stepped up in class to take the Group 3 Acomb Stakes at York.
From there, he went to Doncaster where he turned in another impressive performance to win the Group 2 Champagne Stakes by a wide margin. The authority of that win suggested that Chaldean was well worth his place in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket and partnered by Frankie Dettori, he justified those hopes with a brave front-running victory.
It was a juvenile season that not only demonstrated his abundant talent but also his pace, tough constitution and versatility (equally effective on good and soft ground), all of which came to the fore again the following spring when he overcame difficult conditions to land his second Group 1 in the 2,000 Guineas. As a May 10 foal, it is worth remembering that Chaldean hadn’t turned three when he won that day in Newmarket; indeed, he is the youngest winner of the 2,000 Guineas since Rodrigo De Triano in 1992.
Chaldean wasn’t disgraced on his next start when second to Paddington in the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. Although he didn’t win again in two subsequent starts, his highly accomplished juvenile career and victory in the 2,000 Guineas marked him down as a miler of elite class with the honesty and durability to go with it, all attributes that should stand him in very good stead at stud.
