Daughter of Bated Breath continues her remarkable rise

Yesterday’s feature event at Killarney, the one mile Listed Cairn Rouge Stakes, went the way of the progressive Meriden (Bated Breath) who recorded a maiden stakes success at the first attempt.

Trained by Denis Gerard Hogan and ridden by Chris Hayes, the three-year-old filly settled into a prominent position, allowing the pace to develop in front. Travelling powerfully into contention turning for home, she hit the front passing the furlong marker and quickly established a decisive advantage. Although the favourite Green Carrera finished strongly from the rear, Meriden was always doing enough in front to score by a length and a half, with Sky Watch a further length and a half back in third.

The victory extended Meriden’s winning sequence to five and underlined her rapid progression through the ranks. Rated just 60 at the beginning of May, she has improved with each successive start, climbing steadily through the handicap grades before making a seamless transition to Listed company with the biggest success of her career to date.

Bred by Juddmonte Farms, she was purchased for 32,000gns at the Tattersalls July Sale in 2025 by Avenue Bloodstock. She is a half-sister to the Listed Prix Matchem-placed winner Halfway Line and is out of the Gr.3 Prix Imprudence-placed Midweek. The further family traces back to
