Field Of Gold’s illustrious relation Serena’s Song is widely regarded as one of the iconic American racemares of the recent era. Over 38 starts, D. Wayne Lukas sent her out to win 18 races, 11 of them at Grade 1 level. She was placed in a further nine Grade 1s and was deemed good enough by her legendary handler to take her place against the colts in the 1995 Kentucky Derby.
The diminutive daughter of Rahy retired to the paddocks with a body of work rarely seen in the modern Thoroughbred, and any notions that such an intense career on the track would diminish her breeding prospects were rapidly expelled when she produced Sophisticat, winner of the Group 1 Coronation Stakes (beating Zenda, dam of Kingman) and Group/Grade 2 winners Harlington and Grand Reward among a host of other accomplished performers. Therein lies a snapshot to one of the qualities that this family possesses. Serena’s Song was brilliant on dirt, but her daughter Sophisticat found her forte over a mile on turf in Europe. Harlington excelled on dirt while Grand Reward was effective on both surfaces.
From a line with European roots, Serena’s Song was bred by Dr Howard Baker out of the Northfields mare Imagining. She appears as Field Of Gold’s fourth dam but in an impressive show of current influence is also the ancestress of 2025 Prix du Jockey Club winner Camille Pissarro.
Field Of Gold’s immediate family represents decades-long work of his breeders Bobby and Honora Donworth. Then operating out of Roundhill Stud in Limerick, the Donworths paid $150,000 for his second dam Princess Serena at Keeneland in 2003. The mare was a daughter of Unbridled’s Song, then one of Kentucky’s premier stallions and on his way to becoming regarded as an outstanding broodmare influence; Princess Serena did plenty to aid that reputation by producing nine winners led by the Group 1 Prix d’Ispahan hero Zabeel Prince, Group 2 winners Puissance De Lune and Queen Power and 7f scorer Serena’s Storm, who forged her own dynasty as dam of Champion Rizeena, winner of the Group 1 Coronation and Moyglare Stud Stakes, and Group 2 winner Summer Romance.
Field Of Gold’s dam Princess De Lune, by the increasingly important Shamardal, showed plenty of ability, notably when winning the Bridget Fillies’ Maiden first time out over 7f at Newbury’s Greenham meeting. She has made a rapid start at stud since Field Of Gold is her third foal and preceded by the sales-topping, Listed-winning miler Zanbaq (by Oasis Dream) and the two-year-old winner Lunar Eclipse (by Night Of Thunder).
In all, it’s a consistently talented family and one that is well regarded in commercial circles due to its propensity to show good-looking stock. Field Of Gold is one such example given he was one of the highlights of the 2022 Goffs November Sale when bought by Juddmonte for €530,000.

Green Desert encapsulated much of what made his sire Danzig so successful. Precocious, fast and with the versatility to carry his speed from 5f to a mile, he owned many of the characteristics that helped propel the line to such global influence. Green Desert himself played a major role in that success, and in turn his own sire line has evolved into various different guises over the past two decades, spanning such important branches as Cape Cross, sire of Sea The Stars, Invincible Spirit and Juddmonte’s own Oasis Dream.
Speed remains very much the essence when it comes to Invincible Spirit, a horse who initially made his name by upgrading mares. A leading European sire at his peak, his legacy lives on through a collection of proven sire sons, many of them speed influences typical of the line. At the top of that list stands Kingman, a son of the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches heroine Zenda and therefore a member of Juddmonte’s famous Bahamian line also responsible for the leading sires Oasis Dream and New Bay.
Kingman the racehorse possessed a brilliance that saw him tower over the miling division in 2014, when he swept the Irish 2000 Guineas, St James’s Palace Stakes, Sussex Stakes and Prix Jacques le Marois. He possessed an extraordinary ability to quicken and while each victory was achieved with a degree of dominance - regardless of ground conditions - for many it is the Sussex that sticks in the mind, in which he clocked a time of 10.22 between the two and one furlong pole to run down Toronado.
Kingman’s brilliance was underpinned by a high cruising speed and turn of foot, both attributes invariably inherited by his top performers. There was no better early example than Calyx, his very first winner who was electrifying the day he won the Coventry Stakes.
As it stands at the time of writing, Kingman has supplied over 100 stakes winners headed by 14 at the top level. Palace Pier was a brilliant multiple Group 1-winning miler while Persian King captured the Poule d’Essai des Poulains en route to a versatile career that featured a win in the Prix d’Ispahan and placing in the Arc. Commissioning and King Colorado were Group 1-winning two-year-olds, Elmalka won a 1000 Guineas, Sparkling Plenty won a Prix de Diane and Schnell Meister excelled as a miler in Japan. As is typical of the line, each possessed speed and an ability to quicken - and in that, Field Of Gold, the best of 14 stakes winners from his seventh crop, was certainly no different.
Various sons are now doing their bit to add weight to Kingman’s burgeoning reputation as a sire of sires. The list includes Group 1 sires Calyx and Persian King, Palace Pier, the sire of four stakes winners out of his first crop of European runners in 2025, and Chachnak, a surprise package of the European stallion scene whose representatives include the Prix de Diane and Prix Vermeille runner-up Pink Panthera - all of which bodes well for the prospects of Field Of Gold at stud.

Come July of his two-year-old season, Field Of Gold had emerged as a high-class prospect for John and Thady Gosden with pretensions of a successful juvenile campaign and the scope to develop into a Classic contender at three.
The 7f two-year-old maiden at Newmarket’s July meeting is generally a competitive affair but Field Of Gold turned it into a procession, using his big stride to stretch over three lengths clear of the subsequent Group 3 winner Starzintheireyes. Even at that early stage there were already shades of Kingman to Field Of Gold and the inevitable comparisons were forthcoming when he emulated his sire in victory in the Group 3 Solario Stakes at Sandown. Particularly striking was how easily Field Of Gold travelled through the race before sealing matters with a potent turn of foot.
The soft ground went against him on his final two-year-old start at Longchamp in the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere, but he still ran a brave race to finish fourth to Camille Pissarro.
Field Of Gold’s career, however, was defined by a glittering season at three which saw him end 2025 as the Champion three-year-old miler in Europe.
Having made abundant winter physical progress to develop into a striking individual, he returned with a dominant win in the Group 3 Craven Stakes at Newmarket and was again exceptional in the Irish 2000 Guineas, when he quickened clear with the minimum of fuss to win by a wide margin. As the Racing Post remarked, it was a performance reminiscent of Kingman’s impressive win in the same race 11 years previously and the same could be said of his next appearance in the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, when he exploded clear of fellow Guineas winners Henri Matisse and Ruling Court. Once again, it was that ‘devastating turn of foot’ - in the words of Timeform - that set him apart from his rivals and saw him turn the tables on his 2000 Guineas conqueror Ruling Court, who had finished only half-a-length to the good of him at Newmarket despite getting first run.
It’s fair to say that we didn’t get to see the best of Field Of Gold following the St James’s Palace, with the adverse effects of a low-grade infection that came to light following his second in the Group 2 Bet365 Mile eventually prompting connections to call time on his career.
However, the dominance of those Group 1 wins will ensure that he is remembered as an exceptional miler, and on that sunny afternoon at Royal Ascot, he was certainly one of the best of the recent era.
